ASCO DCCC Town Hall, Sponsored by VSP - Working with People with Disabilities: Providing Quality Care for People Who are Often Marginalized
GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Sandra Block and Ms. Lisa Noble

This session will focus on the challenges that people with disabilities experience when accessing comprehensive eye care. The World Report on Vision and the Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities highlight the fact that persons with disabilities are entitled to the same level of care as their physical and neurotypical peers. That being said, there are many articles that have documented the gaps in accessing the same level of care and a recent survey of primary care physicians revealed general discomfort exists when caring for patients with disability. While this study didn’t survey optometrists specifically, the expectation is the same. Lisa Noble, an Illinois Special Olympics athlete, will share their thoughts about the barriers and their experiences. Dr. Block will highlight several issues that are hurdles that we need to address as faculty and staff within optometry educational programs. Additionally, she will highlight the need to teach our future doctors to address people with disabilities with respect as it relates to ensuring services are equitable, accessible, and affordable as well as the importance of treating patients as adults and communicating with them and their guardians. Most of the patients that present are capable of cooperating in a full primary care exam without much modification and our goal is to have the confidence and competence to provide equitable care.
